PHIL ANSELMO & THE ILLEGALS with WARBEAST, AUTHOR & PUNISHER and CHILD BITE at Royal Oak Music Theatre

FRIDAY AUGUST 9

Child Bite's most recent record is some of the scariest shit I've heard all year... Certainly the scariest bar-none if we're just talking metal-rock records.

Listen: Child Bite // Vision Crimes - (via soundcloud)

Vision Crimes demonstrates lead singer/guitarist(/and occasional keyboard-killing) Shawn Knight's self-appraisal that environment can influence their writing. When you're hanging out with Phil Anselmo, than it's likely going to mutate your songs into spinier beasts. One needs the sharpest of teeth when they sit at the table (stage) of one who helped form the modern aesthetic of sludgy, slamming, scary-as-shit death metal. The aggressive-rock auteur has been busy this last decade with a number of projects, from Down, to The Illegals. Last month saw the release of Walk Through Exits Only with The Illegals (on Housecore Records) and in two months there'll be a horror-film festival.

Child Bite's set to perform at Anselmo's  upcoming Halloween event: The Housecore Horror Film Festival on Oct 25-27th - in Austin TX (more info).

Hopefully by then, Child Bite can announce the next set of scary-yet-strangely-alluring rock singles they've been working on this last month: yet another Anselmo-aligned escapade - they'll be covering songs by Anal Cunt, with Anselmo on lead-vocals.

All this Anselmo-activity seems to be a pretty assuring seal of approval for our local boys, when it comes to making sinewy, sinister styled rock storms. As they've gone from a noise-rock inclined punk-pop outfit into an almost anthemic synth-stung anti-rock aesthetic, and most recently down deep into the swamps of new, interesting incarnations of metal, it looks (and sounds) like they're doing something right, here.

My throat hurts just from listening to all this metal via headphones. I think it'd be best, next, to just see (and hear) it live.
