Jazz beyond the official festival

Jazz won't be confined to the official festival's Campus Martius-to-Hart Plaza corridor this weekend. The city's clubs are still open and happening, though we suspect that they'll be a little slow during festival hours and then hopping for those final sets after the fest closes down.

Among the notable beyond-the-festival events that have come to our attention:

• Tia Fuller and Sean Jones at the Dirty Dog through Saturday.

• Wes "Warmdaddy" Anderson appears with the Josh Davis Quartet at Baker's on Friday. Saturday Allen Barnes holds fort with special guest Calvin Brooks.

• Hot Club of Detroit plus Coryell-Auger-Sample Trio at Cliff Bells on Sunday. The latter is Julian (son of Larry) Coryell on guitar, Karma (son on Brian) Auger on drums and Niklas (son of Joe) Sample on bass. (Vincent Chandler and Andre Wright lead groups there Fridy and Saturday respectively.)

• An after-festival jam Saturday starting at 11 p.m. in honor of Gerald Wilson at the new Virgil H. Carr Center; the jam is hosted by Marcus Belgrave, Oliver Ragsdale Jr. and Bill Foster. Musicians are invited to bring their axes and voices. The Center is at 311 E. Grand River, south of the DAC and west of the Music Hall. 313-965-8430 or 313-715-0170.

Also, through the weekend, you can read Charles H. Latimer's posts for the lowdown on the festival here at the Music Blahg.

And all the photographers at the fest and other Labor Day events are invited to add their shots to our Motor City Seen Flickr stream. You'll find the link at the bottom our our home page.
