Angels are real, y’all. Singer-songwriter, actress, activist, and visionary Janelle Monáe is living proof.

Hot off her highly anticipated third full-length record, Dirty Computer, Monáe tackles blackness, queer identity, and the danger of surveillance states. “For the culture, I kamikaze,” she says on “Django Jane”, a track that introduces the album’s second of three acts that Monáe describes as a “reckoning.” We weren’t kidding when we called Monáe a visionary — just peep the recent stunning visuals for tracks “Make Me Feel” and the Georgia O’Keefian femme anthem “PYNK.” It’s clear that 2018 is the year of Monae, and we are totally here for it.

Janelle Monáe will perform at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, July 9 at the Fox Theatre; 2211 Woodward Ave., Detroit; 313-471-3200; 313presents.com; Tickets start at $39.50.
