The Dex Romweber Duo and Jack White teamed up last week to lay down some tracks. The result is a 7-inch single, scheduled to be released in late May on White's Nashville-based Third Man label.
White has pointed to Romweber -- who was one of the two members of the great (and White Stripes/Black Keys prototype) Flat Duo Jets -- as one of his major influences over the years,. "Dex Romweber was, and is, a huge influence on my music," White has said. "I owned all of his records as a teenager. [He is] one of the best kept secrets of the rock 'n' roll underground."
In an interview with Metromix, Sara Romweber (the duo's drummer) described last week's session. "At one point, Dex was in the room with his guitar and Jack was behind the control board," she recalled. "Jack had the biggest smile on his face and he said, "You have no idea how long I've waited to hear that guitar tone in my studio.'"
The recording took place at White’s home studio in Nashville, produced (of course) by.Jack White and engineered by Grammy-winning Vance Powell (the Raconteurs, the Dead Weather).
In a Detroit double whammy, the Dex Duo is just about to head out on the road with Bloodshot Records pals, the Detroit Cobras, for an extensive U.S. tour (though, ironically, there's no D-town date on the schedule).
The two tracks for the new 7-inch, by the way, are "Last Kind of Word Blues" on the A-side (with Dex on guitar, piano and lead vocals and White on acoustic guitar, lead guitar and harmony vocals) and the Dex-composed "The Wind Did Move" on the B-side (with Dex on guitar, organ and vocals; and Jack on bass, background vocals and a saw!). Sara plays drums, naturally, on both tunes.
