When you can get Godfather of Punk Iggy Pop to eat a hamburger in your music video for “Disaster (Is What We’re After)” as an obvious homage to Andy Warhol, you’ve probably fucking made it. But Pop, who refers to Los Angeles hell-raisers Death Valley Girls as “a gift to the world,” is by no means the coolest part about these ghoulish gloom rockers. With convulsing vocals à la Romeo Void and nightmarish, sludgy power chords, the band’s third studio record Darkness Rains is more exorcism than Instagram — and we are here for it. Rhode Island punk band Gymshorts are also on the bill.
Death Valley Girls will perform wsg Gymshorts on Saturday, Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. at Deluxx Fluxx; 1274 Library St., Detroit; deluxxfluxx.com; Tickets are $10-$12.
