It's still morning back when I started the draft.
Sipping coffee with headphones on...
I'm listening to a song called "Insomnia," by the Legendary Creatures - a song that characteristically embodies the way I personally imagine the world of LC-sounds-and-songs to be... -that of a slow surge of sunlight over hilly, murky-green horizons; their bass, synth and purring voices just like that breathy boom of the outdoors coming to life...the celestial chimes of synths wafting around the corners like glistening dew, the drums plodding along like moccassins over chippy terrain, the low bass buzzing like the crickets referenced by the chorus.
The local 6-piece just put out three new songs, including "Insomnia," on the Beehive Recording Co.'s site...
With these new songs, LC have gotten closer than ever, perhaps they've arrived? to finding the impossible bridge of spacey-prog and ambient drifts down to the muddier, windswept sways of delicately-twanged neo-folk amblings.
Last night LC performed at the Lager House with Nashville-bsaed Honey Locust, a quartet excavating similar sites to find where the bedrock of jangly-acoustic music, grass-stained banjos and all, can mix with and enrich the elegant, brassy waltzes and accordion-lullabies of baroque-pop.
If Legendary Creatures are the soundtrack to that mystical --beginning-of-the-end-of-the-beginning of your sleepless-night-and-brand-new-morning- than Honey Locust are that blissful moment of the day when the afternoon has suddenly extinguished, its inverted bloom into the twilight, orange turns to blue. But what shines through inside their dark-n-pretty tunes is their keen sense for simple, swaying melodies and sweet, blended harmonies.

The first time I heard this song was back in June, I think...permitted a preview inside the studios of band-singer/keyboardist/engineer Chad Thompson. Some of these jams are the exact opposite of having the wind knocked-out-of you... From that point on, I felt like all I wanted to do was listen to it non-stop, or at least, at every opportunity - whether bursting out of bed into the early summer sunrise or at whatever groovy bonfire/bbq I amble my way into on some toasty, star-smattered evening...
It's out now. 2011 may be gone...but 2012's Spring is in full bloom - Come listen to a documentary of a band's evolution over those last two years. These can (and should) be the songs to soundtrack your sun-soaked bike-rides down green-fringed trails - take off....
