Another gathering to celebrate Detroit’s musical exports took place at Club Ultimate in Pontiac Saturday, July 22. Put on by I.T. and The Gentlemen’s Club, Rap Blast 2000 Hip Hop Appreciation Day, delivered plenty of hip-hop flavor and a festive holiday atmosphere.

IRS showed up for the party among others. If you missed it, the organizers are planning a second half, which will take place at the Media Play in Tel-Twelve Mall. And both events are being captured for a documentary. It was a networking dream among the hot shots in the local hip-hop scene; CDs, posters, stickers and cash were free-flowing from hand to hand as the talent worked the mic in the middle of the room. The focus of the event wasn’t on flashy material possessions or money, however. It was meant to encourage the growth and support of the hip-hop nation. With nearly 1,000 people showing up, the nation’s apparently in pretty good shape. Spirits were tainted, however, at around midnight when a scuffle arose between an individual at the event and a police officer. Details were uncertain as of press time.
