For many years, Blue Cheer was in the Guinness Book of World Records as the loudest rock band on Earth; their cover of Eddie Cochran's "Summertime Blues" is often cited as one of the original metal songs. With that in mind, we asked the still-going-strong California trio's bassist-vocalist Dickie Peterson for his five favorite "ear-bleeding songs" (and he took the head cheese theme to heart as well).
5. "Help, I'm a Rock," Frank Zappa: It used to freak me out when I would listen to that song on acid because when it was over, I felt like a rock. And, yes, with all the strangeness Mr. Zappa was capable of within his music, he would often seriously turn my head into cheese!
4. "Last Train to Clarksville," the Monkees: This song would always turn my head into cheese, as I doubt the Monkees have ever been anywhere near Clarksville.
3. Every song on the Stooges first LP: Now there was an ear-bleeding album if there ever was one.2. ??, Yoko Ono: It was a song on the back of one of John's singles. And, man, did my ears bleed! I never found out the name of the song, as it was so repulsive, I never took the time to do so.
1. "Second Time Around," Blue Cheer. So much chaos and destruction in this song that it turns air into cottage cheese and leaves you with ears, nose and every other orifice hemorrhaging.
