After nu-punk steamrollers Hot Water Music broke up, three-fourths of the band went on to create the Draft — a more "indie-fied" version of their past selves. And what better way to shed the skin of yore than to hawk up some mawkish sentimentality and hard-to-come-by honesty? Draft low-ender Jason Black ain't afraid. Here he offers up his monomanias: The five rotten songs he loves and some good and bad things about each of them.

5. "3 Small Words" from the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack: No one can dispute Kay Hanley's pipes, but the lyrics are the sort of grade school, gurl-power, write-his-name-on-my-Trapper-Keeper drivel you'd expect from Avril Lavigne's first demo. I can identify.

4. "Girlfriend" by Avril Lavigne: Listening to this in the company of others is about as comfortable as kissing your mom on the lips. Who wants their mommy?

3. "Satellite" by the Dave Matthews Band: I defer to the "Yeah, but they're such great players" excuse.

2. "What I Got" by Sublime: No disrespect to the departed here, but these are the sort of guys that'll try to get with your mom and your 15-year-old sister by offering them "free dirt-lip" rides.

1. "Last Resort" by Papa Roach: I have a genetic predisposition to embrace anything that I can bounce up and down do. This explains why I like rap-rock and Quicksand.

Sunday, Oct. 7, at Small's (10339 Conant St., Hamtramck; 313-873-1117) with Dead to Me and Gasoline Anthem.
