Fur hasn't found what they are yet, but these sleek, oscillating synth grooves seem to fit them quite well. Their first full-length sounds significantly unlike last year's EP, which, itself, had already diverged considerably from the band's 2010 debut. They went from pristine, spacey indie rock to distortion-stormed, echo-effected shoegaze; and now on Image, the local quintet excavates new wave. Feedback fog dissipates and danceable beats pop to the forefront; they've bridged the dark caustic fuzz of NIN and the nocturnal post-apocalyptic ballroom ballads of Depeche Mode. This is familiar territory for post-punk pros, but for Fur, it's still new ground. —Jeff Milo
