The origin story behind how tight-knit indie trio Dream Wife came to be may or may not have involved Jägerbombs and a disco-dance floor while studying at Brighton University in England. What started as an art project between Rakel Mjöll (vocals), Alice Go (guitar), and Bella Podpadec (bass) in 2014, Dream Wife has since become definitive of the new wave of fierce-femme rock championed by Blondie, Bikini Kill, and the Slits.

“I am not my body/ I am somebody,” Mjöll sings on “Somebody,” which is just one of many examples of Dream Wife’s call to celebrate female solidarity and general badassery found on the band’s recent self-titled debut.

Dream Wife will perform 8 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 30 at El Club; 4114 W. Vernor Hwy., Detroit; 313-279-7382; elclubdetroit.com; Tickets are $12-$14.
