Concert review: Fucked Up at Blowout, May 2 at Loving Touch

To the murmurs of attendees talking about The Fight between welterweight boxers Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao, Toronto six-piece Fucked Up took the stage at MT's Blowout on Saturday around 11:30 p.m. at The Loving Touch in Ferndale to rip through a set full of the driving, sprawling punk songs they're known best for.

While the band was highly energetic, per usual, there was one complaint: the sound at Loving Touch Saturday night wasn’t up to par; the band’s three guitars mostly bled into one another throughout the set, with Jonah Falco’s drum set and Abraham’s vocals overpowering the mix at times.

Nonetheless, FU ripped through a set replete with some of its most memorable work, including “Son the Father” and “Queen of Hearts” off 2008’s Chemistry of Common Life. Abraham’s banter kept the crowd laughing throughout the hour-long set, peppered with lines about the boxing match taking place concurrently with FU’s set and how he, and his wife, have a third child on the way.

The crowd was sparse — unusual given the band has filled to capacity clubs in metro Detroit the last few times they’ve come into town. But FU delivered — again, per usual — with a high-intensity set that makes you wish they came around the area on a more frequent basis.
