The Dave Edwards Band features, no surprises, Dave Edwards of the Look, best known for the MTV hit “We’re Gonna Rock”. The Red Light is On Live On WHFR (Hanzie) sees the rocker recording an acoustic session for the aforementioned radio station, and he’s in fine form. Oft thought of as our Rod Stewart, Edwards proves that he’s well capable of kicking ass even when sitting down and strumming.
The Michigan State University Professors of Jazz album Better Than Alright sees the likes of Etienne Charles, Michael Dease, Randle Gelispie, Diego Rivera, Reginald Thomas and artistic director Rodney Whitaker showing exactly what is going on over at the Spartans music department. Man, teachers were never this cool when I was in school. This double-disc of super-cool, original jazz tunes gives Lansing students more to be proud of than football.
Sick Smile, judging by the Cupcakes & Drive-Bys album, merge reggae and rock in an early Chili Peppers sort of way. It’s not contrived at all though, and despite the laid back nature of the music, it still manages to retain some Detroit grit and not get all surfy and bullshitty. Plus, they get bonus points for using the words cupcakes and drive-bys in the same sentence. That’s gotta be a first.
