City Slang: Weekly music review roundup

Mar 5, 2013 at 11:16 am

Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected].

We didn’t receive much this week, so all attentions goes to the musical The Cross and the Light, a musical dramatization of the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Christ directed by Jamie Kolacki that is coming to the Music Hall Center for the Performing Arts in Detroit. Now, this is obviously a very religious musical. No kidding, right. The thing is, judging by the CD we were sent, the songs are strong enough to appeal to non-Christians, IF (and it’s a big if) you are a fan of big, bombastic Broadway musicals. Soulful and honest, this is a surprising treat.
