The Deadstring Brothers’s has a new album out, Cannery Row (Bloodshot), and that’s reason enough to celebrate. By now, we know what we’re going to get from these guys, and the Americana/alt-country is honest, gritty and, actually, barely alternative at all. Guitarist JD Mack has shifted over from Whitey Morgan & the 78’s, and he’s a great player. Tunes like “Like a California Wildfire” have an old timey, Bluegrass and gospel feel that isn’t contrived or forced at all. These guys are believable, and that’s why they remain one of our best bands of this genre.
Kat Orlando is at the opposite end of the musical spectrum. This pop-soul diva has played around town in various bands for a few years now, playing highly polished music that seems to sit somewhere between Gloria Estefan and Morris Day & the Time. Poster Child is the EP, and it includes a fun cover of Hall & Oates’ “Adult Education”. This will be too shiny and clean for many, but the girl ca sure play the sax.
