Zombie Jesus and the Chocolate Sunshine Band might be one of the best names in Detroit, though there is something about it that hints at “novelty band”. Brrrr, shiver. There’s nothing worse than one of those whacky bands that dress in yellow overalls. Fortunately, these guys are nothing like that and the new The Woolgathering album is awesome. The songs seem to switch from eclectic, arty noise rock to sweet, folksy indie-roots. It’s that unpredictability, and the fact that every tune hits home, that makes them so memorable.
Grim Outlook sent us a five-track demo that is as rough-as-almighty-fuck, with zero production and a terrible mix. The sleeve has the band name scrawled in blue sharpie, and the tracks are hand-written on the back. And I fucking love it. Man, this is what punk used to be like, back before everyone and their girlfriends learned how to use computers. There’s a charm to the growled lyrics that makes them compelling, and the male/female interchange is fun. They might well not get much further than the local bars, but they’ll have a blast trying.
