Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected]
Six and the Sevens features former Spitting Nickels bassist John Bissa and a bunch of young musos that he appears to have taken under his wing. Songs About Girls is the band’s first full length album, and it’s pretty damn sweet. It’s like a sweet Brit Invasion-y band decided to play the Doors / Zappa jam band game. The lyrics, as the album title suggests, are basically about relationships, often failed relationships, but it’s those moments when the guys lose themselves in their music that they really shine.
We love the Hatchetmen. These hairy-ass bastards from the Romeo / Port Huron area combine bar band blues with ZZ Top boogie and a hint of stoner rock, and the Judge & Jury album is one of the most dance-worthy hard rock albums heard this year. Hard, sweaty and ugly fun.
