Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected]
Congress’s Maker is a great little mini-album. Politics seems to be in the news an awful lot lately as the election fast approaches, so what could be more appropriate than a band called Congress? Best of all is the awesomely named “Grease Fire Hula Hoop”, part Dinosaur Jr-esque shoegaze stomp and part old school Detroit garage. The riff is simplistic but played with such ragged abandon, such joyful don't-give-a-shit, that it's impossible not to get carried along for the ride. The pace is sluggish and sludgy, creating a heavy-as-hell effect, hinting that these guys would be slamming live.
The legendary Andre Williams has put out a video for the song “Blame it on Obama”, which apparently caused a heap of controversy due to people getting all het up before actually listening to the song, which happens to be pro the President. It’s a slinky little number too. Williams’ tongue is firmly in his cheek when he blames his wife’s aging appearance on Obama. His wit is still as sharp as ever.
Unlimited Head is a side project from members of Warhorses, and “Hoo-Ray” is the first offering. The riffs are still chunky here, and there’s some manic soloing going on in the background. It’s a little quirkier than the other band though, and the dual male-female vocals sounds great. Fantastic tune.
KPT’s new track, “Aim”, is actually quite beautiful. Trance-y and hypnotic, this is the sort of electronic music that you don’t have to be an attendee of Movement to enjoy. This could be the score to a Lynch movie. It’s dark yet relaxing. Love it.
