Leisure Class’s Parents Evening at the Leper Colony (LeisureCo) is a collection of 20 songs by this veteran Detroit band recorded between ’79 and ’94. According to the press release, they used to piss off audiences all over the area, which is gloriously understandable. Imagine Zappa and the B-52’s joining the cast of the Rocky Horror Show. Schitzo, arty, funk punk.
Rattletrap’s No-Tell Motel (self-released) is a fun EP featuring five rockabilly / cow-punk tunes that are not at all original but would provide the perfect soundtrack to a Saturday night of heavy drinking and Red Wings-watching. Twangy, authentic and damn catchy.
John Nelson is the singer with local noise-makers Destroy This Place. Things in my Mind (Jack Holmes Recordings) is his solo record, and it’s bloody good. The beauty of this album is that Nelson’s regular attitude is still in play. He’s gone acoustic, but hasn’t softened at all. This isn’t some awful John Mayer bullshit. Nelson is honest, inventive and a bit of a revelation here, to be honest.
