Remember – if you send it, it will get reviewed. That’s the City Slang promise. It doesn’t matter what genre the music is – as long as it has a Metro Detroit connection, it’ll get in. Preferably, we’d like to concentrate on new releases but, while we’re getting warmed up here, feel free to send back catalog material too. Send CDs, vinyl, cassettes, demos and 8-tracks to Brett Callwood, City Slang, Metro Times, 733, St. Antoine, Detroit, MI 46226. Email MP3s and streaming links to [email protected].
The Exchange Bureau Music’s The Big 3 (Exchange Bureau Music) might be the most visually impressive set of vinyl we’ve ever received. The 3-disc set comes in black, grey and white vinyl, and there’s a bridge card in there too, which offers discounts to downloads and stuff. It’s a sweet package. As for the music, we have a compilation of incredible electronic music from the likes of Guilty Simpson and Raj Mahal. The whole thing is so Detroit in it’s innovative, industrial flavor that it should be irresistible to music fans from this place. Awesome.
There’s plenty to enjoy with Soulful Shotgun Featuring Dale Hughes’s Butt Rattle single (we couldn’t find a website for these guys, sorry), from the gloriously terrible CD art which looks like a mixture of bad drawing and Microsoft Word clipart to the two old school party funk tunes, the title track and “Big Booty”. It’s like Soul Train for perverts.
Mike Vial & the Great Lake Effect scared the hell out of us when Vial emailed over a link to the new EP, Where the Sand Meets the Tide (self-released), and compared his group to abominable, disgusting, pseudo-emotional bullshit artist John Mayer. He also mentioned James Taylor, and thankfully that’s a lot closer to the mark. The tunes are fun, from the heart and well performed. But Mr. Vial, don’t sell yourself short like that.
