City Slang: Sponge to open for Guns N’ Roses

Yeah, yeah, we know. The current line up of Guns N’ Roses isn’t really Guns N’ Roses. But try telling that to Vinnie Dombroski and Sponge, who have been hand picked by Axl Rose to open for the current incarnation of the legendary rockers at the (relatively) intimate Fillmore show in Detroit on February 12.

Sponge are no strangers to high-profile shows. They played a few with Iggy back in the day, and opened for Kiss in ‘96 on their reunion tour. Still, this is their biggest show in quite a few years.

“It should be a great night playing for the G N R crowd. No doubt we will see these folks singing along to some Sponge songs,” says Sponge’s lead singer Vinnie Dombroski in a press release. He cites Guns ‘N Roses songs "It's So Easy,” "Mr. Brownstone" and "Sweet Child O' Mine" as his personal favorites because “these tunes embody rock and roll swagger and epic writing qualities!”
