There’s something weird but undeniably awesome about watching live music at the zoo. First of all, people can take their kids and let them run around while the bands are playing, getting their faces painted and eating junk food.
But better than that – there are river otters playing just behind the stage. Walk a little further in one direction and there are chimps, gorillas and monkeys. It’s a zoo, after all. But still, you don’t get this fun in the sun at many music venues.
In all seriousness, this is a great idea by the Detroit Zoo. The Detroit Zoo, by the way, is one of the many wonderful things about Detroit. If you don’t visit very often, visit now. Become a member – hell, it pays for itself after a couple of trips. Go in the winter and watch the polar bears come to life.
This week, we saw the Ragbirds play – the ideal band to watch in this environment. Their very bohemian, world-music-y folk rock sounds better in the sun than it does in a dark hall. The gathered crowd can relax, eat a picnic and just let the music wash over them.
Next Wednesday in this Wild Summer Nights series, the Verve Pipe is playing a kid’s set at the zoo. The following week is Jill Jackl, August 14 is Julianne Ankley, August 21 is the Candy Band, and August 28 is Mr. Seley & the Troublemakers.
