City Slang: Holdin’ it down with Marion Hayden

There will be a tribute to jazz bassist Marion Hayden at St. Matthew’s & St. Joseph’s Episcopal Church (8850 Woodward, Detroit) on Sunday, May 13. The event begind at 4 p.m. with an Afterglow to follow. Tickets ate $20, or $40 including the Afterglow.

According to AllAboutJazz.com, “Marion Hayden is one of the nation's finest proponents of the acoustic bass. She creates a rich, dark tone and a very advanced rhythmic concept. Classically trained, she honed he skills in private studies at the prestigious University of Michigan, Michigan State University, and the many jam sessions in Detroit's various jazz clubs.”

”An accomplished composer and educator, Hayden is bass instructor in the jazz department of Tri-C College, Cleveland Ohio, and is on faculty at the U of M School of Music. She has performed or recorded with such luminaries as Marcus Belgrave, Roy Brooks, Kirk Lightsey, Ralph Peterson, Kenny Burrell, Regina Carter and James Carter. Hayden’s mainstay on the Detroit scene is her band Straight Ahead, an all female ensemble that plays frequently around the Detroit-Metro Area.”
