The Detroit Symphony Orchestra’s assistant conductor Teddy Abrams as been selected by the Louisville Orchestra to be their new music director. This news comes just a day following Abrams classical subscription debut with the DSO.

“My time in Detroit has been a vital part of my development as a conductor. I am very fortunate to have worked with the world-class DSO musicians in one of America’s greatest concert halls,” said Abrams. “The great show of support by this community for its orchestra is very special and I look forward to applying my experiences as Assistant Conductor to my new role in Louisville.”

According to a statement by the DSO, “Abrams signed on as DSO Assistant Conductor in 2011. Since then he has curated the DSO’s Young People’s Family Concert and Education Concert series, worked as cover conductor for the classical subscription series, built strong relationships with metro Detroit audiences through neighborhood concerts and other forms of community outreach, and appeared regularly on Live From Orchestra Hall webcasts in a segment titled, “Teddy’s Take.””

“During his two years with us in Detroit, Teddy proved himself not only a very talented Conductor but a person committed to the community,” said DSO Music Director Leonard Slatkin. “His ability to communicate with audiences and the orchestra were remarkable and these abilities will serve him very well in Louisville. All of us here believe that the combination of Teddy and the Louisville Orchestra will be a potent force in the musical world.”
