Faith No More may be no more, but that's not necessarily a bad thing. Foremost, it frees FNM frontman, Mike Patton, to create crazier craziness. Making Mr. Bungle sound like Mr. Mister, Fantomas specializes in ultra-precise bursts of hardcore noise, yet another menace to attention span unleashed by Mr. Patton. Imagine the sound of a motorcycle gang falling asleep at the wheel and crashing into a Napalm Death/Naked City double bill. Patton's the guy in the pit, transcribing that chaos into sheet music. And he's passing out that Fantomas fake book to some pretty powerful friends. Melvins maestro Buzz Osbourne wields the guitar, Patton's Mr. Bungle buddy Trevor Dunn carries the bass, and ex-Slayer drummer Dave "Drums" Lombardo drums the drums. Patton himself covers the larynx duties, more "throat" than "vocals." Kicking open tonight's Fantomas recital comes Kid 606, the gabber terrorist whose overdriven drum 'n' bass beats pound harder than digital hardcore. Gabber? Does that make him retro? Freak these beats at St. Andrew's Hall (431 E. Congress, Detroit). Call 313-961-MELT for more info.
