The oceanic metaphor echoing from one track to the next of Depths, Windy & Carl's latest voyage (with titles like "Undercurrent" and "Set Adrift") recalls a 1978 vinyl slice by minimalist David Behrman, On the Other Ocean (Lovely Music), which involved computer-generated tones in reaction to live soloists. Depths was no doubt put together otherwise, but the results are similarly spacious, liquid and introspection-rich, offering an encyclopedic range of submerged information: from the menacing "Sirens" to the Joy Division-Wirelike "Surfacing" and "The Silent Ocean." Turn up the volume on this darkly confident set by the Dearborn duo and schools of sonic detail swim around the room; play it low and your speakers drone with faraway, undersea chanting. Brian Eno would hum along.
