Popular Detroit sports bar Coaches Corner has made the move from its former home in Harmonie Park to the iconic Michigan Building on Bagley and Cass avenues. Bar owner Dennis Kefallinos, a real estate investor who happens to also own the Michigan Building, originally intended the location site for a new bar concept. But when Coaches Corner suddenly needed a new home, the move seemed destined.
Coaches Corner now occupies a whopping 6,000 square feet inside the Michigan, which is most famous for the attached Michigan Theatre, the opulently beautiful French Renaissance-style theater that once was one of the major attractions in booming Detroit during the late 1920s and 30s. Since Kefallinos has purchased the structure, he has been pretty transparent about his plan to renovate the theater portion, currently a parking garage, into an event space for concerts and theater productions once again. He also hopes to make the entire space a go-to downtown destination for Detroiters looking to shop, grab a bite to eat, or sit down for a drink. Coaches Corner's move signifies a major play in making Kefallinos' dream a reality.
Coaches' new digs boast not only a rich history, but convenience as well, and is now within walking distance of Comerica Park, Fox Theatre, and the Filmore — good news for loyal sports fans and concertgoers alike. The comfortably open layout of the Harmonie Park location has carried over to the Michigan, and is designed for customers to mingle and float from one table to the other. Coaches' carefully thought-out floor plan is a big reason why many Detroiters often recommend it as a great place to hang out with old friends or meet someone new. And with a large dance floor and ample HDTVs at every turn, it's the one of the best places to watch the Tigers or Lions and enjoy pregame and postgame food, drink, and celebration.
Patrons will be happy to hear Coaches still offers a full bar with mixed cocktails, and a nice selection of beers on tap that are always served ice cold. It also doesn't hurt the kitchen stays open late, serving their staple American favorites as well as Niki's famous deep-dish pizza. The real clincher, however, is a new $5 burger and beer special that, along with validated parking, practically mandates that you come in once a week for a quick bite before the big game.
