Nogs for the poly-nog-ist

Oh, egg nog! How gross you do sound!

Traditional egg nog contains whole milk, heavy cream, sugar, nutmeg, bourbon ... and raw eggs. Kinda churns the tummy just reading it. Go to the grocery store though, and you'll likely find a nog in the dairy cooler with milk. Any of those nogs can contain milk, nutmeg, and a generous helping of high fructose corn syrup and weird preservatives the common shopper cannot pronounce.

So what's an ugly-sweater-loving, carol-singing, festive lactose-intolerant party-goer to do?

Fear not! There are plenty of nogs to choose from that are faux — and just as delicious:

Soy Nog

Commonly sold as Silk Nog, produced by that infamous soy milk brand. Delish and lactose-free and still mixes well with bourbon!

Rice Nog

For the soy- and lactose-free, rice nog satisfies the nog urges, without the bubbly tummy.

Almond Nog

Make your own by adding vanilla, sugar, and nutmeg to regular almond milk. Heck, adding those to just about any milky beverage sounds delightful.

Coconut Nog

SoDelicious coconut nog is perfect for those who are refraining from soy, rice, dairy, and nuts. It's also the preferred faux nog to add a splash of rum.

You may also note that there are a number of other holiday faux-drinks, including peppermint chocolate soy milks and pumpkin-spiced rice milks.

All of these holiday beverages are only available this time of year. Stock up now so you'll have plenty of faux nog to last you through 2015.
