Flower fair — That annual floral extravaganza returns May 21 to Eastern Market. It's called Flower Day, and it fills the market with the color and perfume of thousands of plants. The annual event is reckoned to be the world's largest bedding flower sale. Bring your wagon, wheelbarrow or buggy down to Russell Street in Detroit and take home some "local color."

Tower fare — Residents of Riverfront Condominiums on the west side of downtown will soon have a new restaurant in Signature Grille and Bar. Riverfront Towers' newly expanded and remodeled restaurant, Signature Grille and Bar, will open its doors for business on Saturday, May 20. The 80-seat casual restaurant will serve American cuisine, and the owners envision a place where guests can enjoy relaxed dining at tables with dramatic views of the Detroit River, or meet for drinks in the more casual bar, which has multiple plasma televisions and serves such items as rib eye steak, sandwiches, hamburgers, chicken wings and appetizers. There are also plans for Signature Market, a gourmet shop selling gourmet deli items, specialty foods, wine, liquor, flowers and fresh meats and produce, to open in June. For more information call 313-394-0667.

Guzzle Me

The recent reign of the mojito as a prime summer drink has made it a poolside standard. Here's a springtime refresher from the makers of Bacardi Rum: Gently crush 12 fresh spearmint leaves and lightly squeeze a lime half in a cool tall glass. Pour two tablespoons sweet syrup (or 4 teaspoons sugar) to cover and fill glass with ice. Add 1-1/2 ounces Bacardi Rum, 7 ounces club soda and stir well. Garnish with a lime wedge and a few sprigs of mint. You can substitute a citrus-flavored rum or some mango juice to twist the flavors a bit.

It Works

p>Indispensable? Not sure about that. But it is a cool tool. One of the cardinal sins of barbecuing and grilling is piercing the meat, which allows the flavorful juices to escape, leaving an otherwise juicy steak dry. The Pigtail food flipper claims to eliminate the risk of piercing, dropping, flipping and moving food by "hooking" it with the stainless steel tapered end. We've never had much of a problem with tongs, but if nothing else, the Pigtail is easier to clean and takes up less space.
