Bumbo's Bar gets a soft opening in Hamtramck this weekend

Chances are most Hamtramck bargoers are going to be too busy trying to fit in all the shows the Hamtramck Music Festival has to offer, but they might take a quick second or two to check out Hamtramck's newest bar — even though it isn't really that new at all.

For years, it has been known as Hank's Bar, the quintessential Hamtramck old-man bar, where the front door is always locked and the side door is always open. Now, however, it's been given a spruce-up by husband-and-wife couple Brian and Tia Krawczyk.

Both are actually hometown Hamtramck folks. Brian used to play in bands around town as long ago as the 1990s. Several years ago, he followed his girl Tia out to Los Angeles, where they married. But they came back to town with the dream of opening their own Hamtramck bar,

In fact, you might better know Brian as "Bumbo," because he's earned a bit of fame with his pop-ups at Nancy Whiskey, where he serves a menu that can include potato, spinach, mushroom and gorgonzola pierogi, as well as kielbasa sliders with caramelized onion and apple compote, and even dilled, creamed lentils with smoked trout. Well, the couple has been working like hell on the place, and finally has go-ahead from the officials to open the bar.

That said, he wants to keep it a little on the soft side, and with so many people in town for the bands, he figures HMF weekend is a good time to get noticed without getting totally mobbed.

Drop in and have a look. He'll be open 8 p.m.-2 a.m. Friday-Saturday, March 6-7, and probably have some sort of brunch between noon and 5 p.m. Sunday, at 3001 Holbrook Ave., Hamtramck.
