Danny Fenster, in Conversation

On May 24, 2021, while attempting to fly home to Detroit, writer and journalist Danny Fenster, then working in Yangon as managing editor of the anglophone magazine Frontier Myanmar, was arrested by agents of the Burmese junta that had seized power the previous February. He spent the next six months in prison. This September 15, he returns to Wayne State University, where he earned a Master’s in English in 2016. Fenster will discuss his experiences in Myanmar, the growing global threat of authoritarian surveillance, and the imperiled role of the writer as truth-telling witness. Free and open to all.
