Iannis Xenakis (1922-2001) was a real badass of 20th century classical music. His challenging electro-acoustic music sprang from his initial careers as an engineer and architect. Xenakis introduced elements of chance and game theory into his works from early on, in the 1950s, but he also made engaging tape-based and electronic works. There is a whole lot of clanging going on in his stuff, especially his breakthrough “Bohor, for electro-acoustic sounds (1962),” which incorporates something called “octophonic sound” and forms the centerpiece of tonight’s set of Xenakis performed by percussion artist Zac Brunell.
