Vive la différence!

Those of us having less and less use for the Oscar ceremonies, with their high-priced winners and egocentric celebs, might want to see what the weirder half is doing this Saturday night, March 24. The 16th Annual Independent Spirit Awards, honoring the high-water marks of the past year’s independent film flood, will be broadcast live from Santa Monica, Calif., on the Independent Film Channel (IFC), beginning at 5 p.m. EST (rebroadcast at 9:45 p.m. EST). The host this year is none other than Indie Godfather and High Prince of Strange, John Waters, who couldn’t resist a free-thinking one-liner about his selection: “Hosting the Independent Spirit Awards makes me feel like a combination of Buddy Hackett and Satyajit Ray.”

If your cable company doesn’t offer the IFC, then look for a 10 p.m. rebroadcast of the whole event on the IFC’s sister network, Bravo. Also available is a live cybercast of the awards on www.ifctv.com. Either way, you won’t have to put up with Joan Rivers’ comments on Tinseltown’s hideously dressed — she and her daughter proving that it takes one to know one.
