Up for auction: Historic Baker's Keyboard; asking $450,000

Long in the news for its financial woes*, Baker's Keyboard Lounge faces a bankruptcy sale at the end of the month.

Here are some details from Friedman Real Estate Group, Inc., based in Farmington Hills, which is handling the sale:

World's oldest jazz club. Well known establishment. Possible expansion. Owner retiring. Building, business, inventory, liquor license, parking lot for sale. Located just south of 8 Mile Rd on Livernois.

The sale price is stated as $450,000 for 3,500 square feet of the club, which holds about 100 patrons.

Paul Feldman, who is handling the sale at Friedman's, tell us that they've received one offer and one letter of intent, both from prospective purchasers he believes are interested in keeping Baker's as a jazz club, although he couldn't divulge the identities or the money amounts.

The period for offers ends Jan. 31 with an auction in the downtown Detroit law offices of the attorney handling owner John Colbert's bankruptcy proceedings.

Are you a jazz angel who wants to make a bid to preserve a piece of history? Do you know one? Here's your chance.

(*An earlier version of this now-updated post said that Baker's as an institution was in bankruptcy proceedings. Feldman corrected us to note that the club is being sold as part of Colbert's bankruptcy.)
