Studio madness

Here’s a rare two-day treasure: Maureen Maki, one of Detroit’s most electrifying artists, is selling off tons of her stuff (paints, some furniture, cool T-shirts, dresses and lots of super art!) as well as copies of her band Paper Tiger’s new CD (with one of Maki’s slammin’ paintings on the cover), just before leaving town for parts West. This prolific, high-stakes painter has produced works of such in-your-face vitality that those familiar with her canvases will be sure to line up early. Maki’s studio is at 2000 Brooklyn, just north of Michigan Avenue and west of the John Lodge (near the old Tiger Stadium) in Detroit. Hours are 1:30-5 p.m. Saturday and noon-5 p.m. Sunday. Yow! This could jump-start your collection. George Tysh is the Metro Times arts editor. E-mail him at gtysh@metrotimes.com
