In April 2014, at the age of 65, Knight released the debut album with his large, horn-heavy, R&B-savvy backing band the Lakers. I’m Still Here found the fiery, Minneapolis-based soul singer belting heavy songs in a ‘60s style that are both youthful and gravelly at the same time. Knight first recorded a 45 at the age of 17, with Little Sonny Knight & the Cymbols, in 1965, but a three-year stint in the Army cut his career short. He later performed with a soul band called Haze in the ’70s, and later with some other older soul musicians, but he’s never really gotten his due until now. In anticipation of their June release, Do It Live, Sonny Knight and the Lakers will bringing their powerful, stomping sound to the Magic Bag.
