Beginning in the late 1970s, dance music culture began to take hold in nightclubs across the country. These were safe spaces for people of color, the LGBTQ community, and creatives seeking sanctuary from mainstream cultural norms. Through the photographer’s lens, we witness the ways in which these communities publicly embraced alternative identity and boundary-crossing music. Moderators Adrian Loving (educator/DJ/writer) and Vikki Tobak (journalist/culture writer will frame the conversation. Panelists to include Derrick May, Carleton Gholz, Adriel Thornton and Dee Jones.
