The ride side — This week, Proactive offers a forum to Lawrence Hands, head of the group Transportation Riders United. Hands wants y’all to turn out Thursday, Aug. 18, and raise your voices in opposition to the plan to expand I-75 from Eight Mile Road to M-59. Here’s why:
“For the last 50 years, metro Detroit’s transportation policy has been to build roads and starve transit, effectively subsidizing sprawl while devastating many existing communities. Due to this lack of balance in our transportation investment, the region is now suffering and will continue to suffer until a more diversified and robust policy is implemented.
“Wasting money on sprawl-inducing road widenings that further divide and separate us, make us more dependent on foreign oil, and do not enhance the vitality of our established urban communities is bad.”
If you agree — and unless you own a road-building company there’s no reason you shouldn’t — go to the Commissioner’s Auditorium at the Oakland County complex, 1200 N. Telegraph Rd., Pontiac. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m.

Peace out — A group called Veterans for Peace wants parents and high school students to know they have the option to “opt out” when it comes to having information about the kids handed over to military recruiters. Bob Krzewinski, coordinator for the Washtenaw County chapter of the group, asked Proactive to help get the word out, and we’re happy to comply.
