Hash it out — An informational meeting and rally in support of reforming U.S. drug policy (and we ain’t talking prescription meds here, folks) will be held at 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 23, at the Innate Healing Arts Center, 18700 Woodward Ave. (south of Seven Mile Road) in Detroit. The event will bring together a variety of groups working to alter the course of the U.S. war on drugs. Included will be info on efforts to pass medical marijuana initiatives in Ferndale and Traverse City. There will also be music and a bonfire. Call Mike Whitty at 248-594-7596.
Give peace a chance — Mark your calendars for this one: Author and activist Tom Hayden, a former California legislator (and graduate of Royal Oak’s Dondero High) who played a prominent role in the anti-war movement of the Vietnam era, will be the keynote speaker at an event being put on by the Huntington Woods Peace, Citizenship and Education Project. The author of nine books, Hayden co-founded the group Students for a Democratic Society. We guarantee any speech he gives will be well worth listening to. Hayden’s talk will be part of a broader community teach-in focusing on the war in Iraq. The event features panel discussions covering issues such as the cost of the war and strategies that might be used to help bring an end to that conflict. The event, from 9:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. on April 9th, will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Woodward at 11 Mile Road, Royal Oak. Contributions will be encouraged.
