Vent event
Few notices promoting an event are as touching as one received this week. It begins:
“Since Tuesday, November 2nd, the staff at Affirmations Lesbian and Gay Community Center have seen a tremendous amount of sadness, grief, and anger at our recent elections. We’ve seen it in the eyes of those walking into the Center and we’ve heard it in numerous conversations, both on the phone and in person, that we’ve had with our community members. We feel it as a staff, as community members, as people. Our straight allies have voiced incredible shame at knowing their fellow citizens voted to discriminate against gay people, burning it into the Michigan Constitution.”
What to do about the sorrow and outrage? Come together and vent. And then, as the activists at Affirmations suggest, “get organized and do something about it.”

Unclog SEMCOG As discussed in the pages of this rag earlier this year (“Engines of sprawl,” Metro Times, Aug. 18), the Southeast Michigan Council of Governments (SEMCOG) gives a disproportionate amount of its decision-making power to interests representing the outer suburbs. At the upcoming annual meeting of Cityscape Detroit, Ferndale City Manager Tom Barwin will discuss the legal effort attempting to force the regional planning body to reform its governing structure. The meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 17, at 1515 Broadway Ave. in downtown Detroit. Cost of the event to non-members is $5. Contact Cityscape Detroit at 313-438-0295.
