After a years-long effort that required FAA approval and drew unlikely support from Police Chief James Craig, professional race car driver and native Detroiter Brian Olatunji will hold Detroit’s first-ever legal drag racing event. Olatunji races funny cars with the National Hot Rod Association and says he wants to show Detroiters what drag racing really is, versus the clandestine and illegal races that often take place in the city of Detroit. The event promises to deliver “wheel standing, fire breathing 2,000-plus horsepower cars and the fearless stars who drive them of the ‘no-prep’ grudge-racing world, along with a world-class car show exhibit.”

Gates open at 3 p.m.; 11499 Conner St., Detroit; 313-687-4626; motorcityshowdown.com; Tickets start at $20 for adults, free for children 12 and younger.
