25 years ago in Metro Times: A bidding war over GM's new Saturn operation has 21 governors vying for the project. Ultimately, it would not be Detroit nor even Michigan but Spring Hill, Tenn., that would get the first Saturn assembly line six years later. GM now plans to phase out the brand by October. Also in MT, John Richardson talks with Gary Grimshaw about 20 years of creating historic concert posters (art at right). An April 17 dance-concert-poetry benefit at Bohemian National Home is to help Grimshaw with his current medical challenges. Karen Holcombe Merrill of Common Cause in Michigan says, "If you want to deal with this, you have to deal with it from the start. The time to deal with this is now, not five years from now when we have a big problem." Also, Allen Ginsberg, who died earlier in the month, is remembered by Chris Tysh. 4 years ago in Metro Times: Khary Kimani Turner and Jonathan Cunningham delve into the shooting of Deshaun Holton, better known as Proof throughout Detroit's hip-hop community. He was fatally shot at a club after an argument. DJ Houseshoes sums up the rapper's impact on Detroit's hip-hop community: "Proof was the embodiment of Detroit hip hop. He carried us on his shoulders for the last 15 years. ... I don't know if the hip-hop scene is really gon' recover from this one." Holton was 32. What was happening: R Kelly at the Fox Theatre.
