There is a new interactive art installation coming to Beacon Park, just in time for Cinco de Mayo. The installation, called Los Trompos — which is Spanish for “spinning tops” — is originally from Mexico City, and will visit us from May 5 through June 9.

The eight giant, colorful tops, designed by Héctor Esrawe and Ignacio Cadena, are large enough for multiple people to sit or stand inside them, and visitors are welcome to take a spin. They were designed to facilitate play, celebrate culture, and bring people together to interact and connect.

Los Trompos is an interactive piece that comes to life when people engage with it. The tops are based on the construction of the actual toy and reflect the work of Mexican artisans, as well as Mexican culture, art, and architecture.

“We wanted to talk about the traditions and skills of the craftsmen in Mexico as an inheritance of our culture,” Esrawe said, according to the Beacon Park website. “We like the idea of translating these techniques into new symbols.”

Héctor Esrawe is an industrial designer with a cross-disciplinary design atelier located in Mexico City. Ignacio Cadena is the founder of Cadena+Asoc. Concept Design, a Mexico-based interior design firm. The two often collaborate with each other, and together they won two Interior Design Best of Year awards in 2017.

The art installation
will premiere during the inaugural Cinco de Mayo Celebration at Beacon Park on Sunday, May 5, from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. The event will feature live music, salsa dance performances and lessons, taco trucks, a bar, and beverages provided by Lumen available for purchase. After that, the art installation will be open during park hours, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., through June 9.

Los Trompos was originally commissioned by the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. To see a video of the spinning tops, click here. For more information, visit the Beacon Park website.
