Kick out the lambs

“It is comfortable food — not comfort food.” That’s the way Phil Jones, chef and general manager at Lola’s, describes his style of cuisine. On the menu and the walls, this latest and most exciting addition to Harmonie Park’s restaurant row offers a modern and international twist on the accessible. Serving dishes as wide-ranging as chicken curry, Argentinean rib eye, Thai-influenced spicy mussels, wasabi scallops and Greek lamb stew (some of which are not yet available, but will be soon), their taste showcases an explosive global range. And what’s just as exciting is the urban graffiti in the bathrooms, commissioned by the young and creative owners, husband-and-wife duo Tanya and Roger Yopp. Artist Gigi Bolden has painted fresh, hip hop-inspired portraits that embolden the personality of the place, making it a perfect fit for a neighborhood with so much class and sass. 1427 Randolph St., in downtown Detroit’s Harmonie Park; 313-962-0483.
