Since leaving My Morning Jacket (a band that is, inarguably a divisive pick in the halls of great alternative rock bands of the aughts) with 2015’s The Waterfall, James has gone on to make some dreamy and haunting solo soundscapes, including last year’s companion records Uniform Distortion and Uniform Clarity, which finds the 41-year-old caught between effects pedals and guitar shredding and acoustic sparseness.
