Irma Thomas Staff Pick

When: Sun., Oct. 29, 7 p.m. 2017
Price: $30+
“The Soul Queen of New Orleans” Irma Thomas may have been compared to contemporaries Aretha and Etta since the beginning, but what Thomas has managed to do is far greater than follow in footsteps — she paved a path. At the age of 13, Thomas began singing in a Baptist choir, then snagged a record deal and released her first single, "Don't Mess with My Man,” while working as a waitress in NOLA to support her four children at the age of 19. Now, at 76 years old, Thomas is teaming up with a group of performers from Preservation Hall and the Blind Boys of Alabama to bring a little bit of the Big Easy to the Motor City.

Doors open at 7 p.m.; 350 Madison St., Detroit; 313-887-8500.;; Tickets start at $30.
