The Detroit Jazz Festival Foundation, DTE Beacon Park Foundation, and the Downtown Detroit Partnership are kicking off the summertime jazz series on May 17 at Detroit’s Beacon Park.

The event will feature two bands from the inaugural DJFF “Jazz Goes to College” Combo Competition — Michigan State University’s Becoming Quintet and Indiana University’s Heartland Trio.

Heartland Trio’s 2018 album Year One and Becoming Quintet’s 2019 debut album One-Track Mind can be streamed on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon Music.

The show will start at 7 p.m. and each act will perform a 45-minute set. The concert will be the first of five free summer jazz shows offered.
