Adult Beginners Comedian and actor Nick Kroll is hilarious and honest in this indie comedy. Kroll plays a hip entrepreneur who is just riding the cusp on uber-success in New York City. On the eve of his new product dropping, the company falls through and he loses all his investor friends and his money. He decided to head to the burbs to stay with his pregnant estranged sister (the wonderful Rose Bryne), her husband (Bobby Cannavale), and his three year-old nephew. In exchange for living with them, Kroll has to babysit his nephew and in that he learns a lot about himself. It’s a pretty basic coming-of-age as an adult storyline, but the cast is hilarious and the writing is sharp so it makes up for the lame premise.

Animaniacs No, your eyes are not deceiving you. The zaney and wildy weird cartoon Animaniacs are now streaming on Netflix. The cartoon follows siblings Yakko, Wakko, and Dot as they wreak havoc on Hollywood. We’re still not sure what the Animaniacs actually are (cats? mice?) but this classic cartoon from the 90’s is just as great as it was back then.

Blackfish Ready to hate SeaWorld forever? Ok, good. This documentary reveals the truths about the amusement park SeaWorld and how they treat their animals- especially the killer whales. This controversial documentary lit up a firestorm of people protesting SeaWorld and demanding they release the whales back into the wild. Granted this is a documentary so it is clearly showing one side, they make a solid claim to as why the park should be banned forever. Free Willy, indeed.

The Characters For fans of alt-comedy, this Netflix original is for you. Netflix gave 8 comedians the opportunity to make their own half-hour special. It can be in any format- most of them are sketch-like- and the comedians play as many characters as possible. The result? 8 hilarious comedians really stretching their improv and character skills. All of the comedians are very well known in the comedy world, but are rising household names. Personal favorite episodes are Lauren Lapkus, John Early, Natasha Rothwell, and Paul W. Downs.

Documentary Now Coming from the minds of Bill Hader, Fred Armisen, and Seth Meyers- Documentary Now is the ultimate spoof and satire of the documentary genre. The trio of SNL alum created this fake documentary show called Documentary Now (kind of like Turner Classic Movies) and they tackle the classic documentary troupes. There is a complete spoof of the classic Grey Gardens appropriately called “Sandy Passages.” The best episode is the two-parter called “Gentle and Soft: The Story of the Blue Jean Committee” which is a send-up to the classic rock-doc genre. Armisen and Hader play the founders of the fiction 70’s soft-rock band The Blue Jean Commitee and discuss their influence on rock music today with guest cameos from Daryl Hall, Kenny Loggins, and Haim.

Flaked This Netflix original series had us scratching our heads, but we’re still committed to finishing the 8-episode show. It stars Will Arnett who plays a recovering alcoholic who lives in Venice Beach, California and is trying to get his life together. It is nice to see Arnett playing a more serious character, but this is supposed to be a comedy and Flaked is following the trend of over-serious comedies like Girls, Louie, and Looking.

Good Burger We know you want to say it. Welcome to Good Burger, home of the Good Burger, can I take your order? Ah yes, Good Burger, the nostalgia-inducing movie that stemed from 90’s sketch show All That is available to stream on Netflix. Need a reminder of what it's about? Well, comedic geniuses Kenan and Kel are working at the local burger joint and run into trouble when the new rival Mondo Burger wants to be the top dog in the burger business. The movie is silly and kinda dumb, but there’s a weird heart behind it all that makes you feel all warm inside. Plus, there’s a hilarious Carmen Electra cameo that will make you want to Google what happened to her.

Happy Valley Now that Downton Abbey is over with it’s time to obsess over another British drama that America has imported. Season 2 was just added this past week so there is plenty of time to catch up. The show follows police officer Catherine Cawood as she patrols the streets of Yorkshire (the same town where Downton Abbey was set in, too!). The writing is fantastic and the acting is truly superb.

Pee-wee’s Big Holiday Loveable man-child Pee-wee Herman is back, this time with Netflix, with a new adventure and a new cast of bizarre characters. Pee-wee is enjoying life in Fairville until his band- The Renegades- decide to break up and Pee-wee spirals into existential crisis mode and next thing we know he’s on his way to NYC to attend the real Joe Manganiello’s birthday party. The film is co-produced by Paul Reubens and Judd Apatow, the film stays very true to earlier “Pee-wee’s Playhouse” days.

Tiny Furniture This indie darling comes from Lena Dunham before she created her TV show Girls on HBO. Dunham writes, directs, and stars in this movie (much like she does in Girls) about a recent college graduate who has to move back in with her mother and little sister because she is jobless. Dunham’s character, Aurora, is very much like Dunham herself, but with a little twist. Whereas Girls deals with life after college on your own, Tiny Furniture deals with that exact awkward moment that you arrive back at your parents house after four years of college freedom.
