People looking for something to do on the weekend usually look elsewhere in this paper to find out, in the immortal words of Marvin Gaye, what’s goin’ on, but there is a pair of events taking place this Sunday (Oct. 7) that News Hits would like to recommend.
First there’s a dinner at which a few of our favorite people will get some well-deserved recognition. The Michigan Coalition for Human Rights will bestow honors upon Episcopal Bishop H. Coleman McGehee, Detroit NAACP leader the Rev. Wendell Anthony and Kary Moss, executive director of the ACLU of Michigan. The evening will be highlighted by an address from Missouri Supreme Court Justice Ronnie L. White.
White’s name, you may recall, was featured prominently when a man much in the news these days — U.S. Attorney General John Ashcroft — was going through his nomination hearings. White’s nomination to the federal bench by President Clinton was blocked by then-Sen. Ashcroft on the basis of what White’s many supporters considered to be “lies and innuendoes”
The topic of White’s speech will be “The Place of Human Rights in the Appointment of Federal Judges.” The event begins at 4:30 p.m. at Marygrove College, 8425 W. McNichols, Detroit. For more information phone Dr. Charles Rooney at 248-980-5504.
Also on tap for Sunday is the long-awaited screening of Los Patritados: Exiles from the Promised Land. The documentary video was created by a group of descendants of repatridaos, the Mexicans who were returned to Mexico during the years of 1929 to 1939. A panel discussion will follow the 3 p.m. showing in the lecture hall at the Detroit Institute of Arts. There will also be a reception in the Diego Rivera Court in honor of Detroit Hispanic community’s elders from 5-7 p.m. There is no charge for either the program or the reception. For more information, or to RSVP, contact Elena Herrada at [email protected] or phone 313-961-1042.
