Go girls

News Hits congratulates Alternatives for Girls — not only for providing transitional housing and programs for homeless girls — but for being the first nonprofit to receive the Wade Hampton McCree Jr. award. Last week, the Federal Bar Association’s Eastern Michigan District honored the Detroit organization for its outstanding work with the award named after the late judge and U.S. solicitor general; the award goes annually to local individuals and groups working for social justice. AFG has provided support and resources to 6,600 girls and their families since it opened 14 years ago. The organization, which runs on a shoestring budget, is currently raising money to build a new facility to expand its services. For more information on AFG, call 313-964-5450 (and see the links at left for previous MT stories about Alternatives for Girls).
